If your car is running poorly, you may be having problems with your EGR valve. There are no real tests you can perform at home for EGR valve function. If you have removed your EGR valve, often you can shake it and you will be able to hear the diaphragm moving back and forth inside. If you can hear it moving, there is a good chance that your EGR valve is good and needs to be cleaned to return to normal function.

If you don't hear anything, your EGR valve might be stuck. Of course, since this is not a reliable test! But if you are into general reckoning rather than definitive testing, this might be a starting point.

If you do need to clean your EGR valve, it's not too difficult. What follows are general steps that apply to most units. Newer EGR valves are electronic and have a wiring harness connected to them. For newer units, it is very important to avoid getting corrosive cleaners on the wiring and connectors.

These problems result mainly from poor combustion, which stifles the engine.

Locate the Valve
Begin by locating the valve. Its exact location varies from one vehicle to another. If you are having trouble, consult the owner's handbook. It is also possible to find a layout of your engine's components online.
Remove the Valve
Because the valve may not have been touched since it was installed in the factory, there is a good chance its retaining bolts may be rusty or are simply too tight to be loosened as they are. Spray the bolts with rust penetrant and allow them to sit for several minutes in order to loosen them for removal. While you wait, locate the vacuum lines and electrical harness that feed into the EGR valve. If necessary, label these so you can place them back into their correct ports later, and then disconnect them from the valve. Next, remove the retaining bolts using the appropriate socket. Pull the EGR from the engine compartment.
Inspect the Gasket
Check the gasket on the valve. If it is intact, it is not necessary to replace it. However, if the gasket appears worn or damaged in any way, replace the gasket with a new one.
Clean the Gasket
Once the valve is free from the vehicle, lay it on a rag. Most valves attach to an electric solenoid and a vacuum motor. While cleaning the valve, it is important to avoid spraying the solenoid and motor, as cleaners and solvents can damage these components. Spray the valve with the carb cleaner and wipe away any buildup that remains, while being sure the cleaner does not drain into the electrical components. You can use a screwdriver to scrape off carbon deposits.
Check the metering rod
In order for the valve to perform properly, the metering rod must be able to move freely back and forth. To check this, insert a screwdriver into the port and push the rod in and out. If the rod slides smoothly, the valve is ready for use. If not, apply the cleaning solvent to cotton swabs and use them to clean the port and the rod.
Reconnect the Valve
Once the rod moves smoothly, return the valve to the vehicle's engine compartment. Be sure to attach the electrical harness and vacuum lines.
